Oakland County Amateur Radio Public Service Corp (ARPSC) Weekly Net: Thursdays at 8 pm on 145.250 MHz/100pl Web Site: http://www.qsl.net/w8oak Meeting Minutes for 2 July 2003 On 2 July 2003 at 7 pm, Joel Goldberg, W8HIU, Emergency Coordinator (EC) for the Oakland County ARPSC called the meeting to order in the County E.O.C. The order of business included: (1). Comments from Joel Goldberg, W8HIU, EC: The Oakland County ARPSC has not heard anything from the Woodward Dream Cruise Committee concerning amateur radio needs for Saturday, 16 August 2003. They will be contacted in the near future to clarify this. The Oakland County Disaster Exercise, to be held on 25 September 2003, has not yet requested ARPSC assistance, but rumors suggest this will change. At least six county hospitals are expected to participate, but this number could extend to all thirteen county hospitals including one in Genesee County. The exercise will involve the Auburn Hills Training Facility and the CNN railroad yards. Our participation could be used for the next stimulated emergency test (SET). The list of available ARPSC volunteers is being up-dated to assist our activities. Barry Kaufman - WD8JWM, Jim Thompson - N8USP, and Joel Goldberg, W8HIU, will be in charge of operations at one week intervals. Approximately 90% of RACES card background checks have come back. There are no rejections so far. Ralph Greenberg, K8CAR and Harry Austin, KC8TEV have been appointed to work with the hospitals to check out their radio installations, to develop databases, etc. The ARPSC is encouraging Oakland County hospitals to install duo-band radios and equipment, with equipment costs estimated to be in the $600-700 range. Federal money may be available to them by requesting to Homeland Security's Regional Area and Combined Counties Funding. A volunteer is needed to keep the Oakland County ARPSC membership list up-to-date and would work with Loretta Pethick. Nominations for the ARRL Section Manager are due in September. This last Saturday of July is the District Coordinators Meeting. There will be a Wednesday, 6 August 2003 Meeting of the Oakland County ARPSC - please come. (2). Comments from Steve Iannucci, Oakland County Emergency Response and Preparedness (ER&P): According to Tracy, siren coverage for the last two months has been a remarkable 100%. The ARRL has now become an official affiliate program of the Citizen Corps, an initiative within the Department of Homeland Security to enhance public preparedness and safety. Homeland Security has stated that we have become emergency responders. Officials from the State of Michigan are now working with this concept and they are expected to report back. Joel Goldberg, EC, added the affiliate program would also provide training, volunteer services, and support for communications. (3). Comments from Jim Thompson, N8USP, DEP: The IS-2 class was cancelled because fewer than the minimum number signed up. Since then, several members from the GM Amateur Radio Club have indicated interest and this class may be rescheduled at a later date. Joel Goldberg, W8HIU, EC, has a copy of the IS-120 reading material and this is available to borrow for self study. Classes coming up are tentatively (1) early October for IS-271 and (2) IS-3 in early November. (4) Comments from Ken Barnes, N8COQ Oakland County ARPSC Field Day was held 28 June 2003. There were 95 SSB QSO's with 35 States and one with Cuba. The unofficial score is thought to be 1490 points.
